Foreign
Minister Uri Rosenthal has announced that the Netherlands will be stopping its
development aid to Suriname in reaction to the passing of law there last week
granting amnesty to the suspects of the December murders, the killings of
dictator Desi Bouterse’s political opponents in 1982.
The
minister added that economic sanctions were not feasible “much to my regret”.
He would however investigate whether some measures might be possible in a
European Union context.
The Dutch
ambassador to Suriname, who returned home the day after the amnesty law was
passed, will not be returning to Paramaribo for the time being.
The
cessation of aid had wide support across parliament.
The Dutch
government is considering whether the 20 million euros intended for the
Surinamese authorities could not be given to other organisations in the former
Dutch colony. The opposition Socialist Party suggested investing it in
healthcare or education at home.
