Mexico City (AFP) - Indigenous communities in southern Mexico voted overwhelmingly to approve President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's pet project to build a regional railroad aimed at boosting tourism and economic development, the government said Monday.

The $6.2-billion "Maya Train" is meant to link Caribbean resorts such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen with ancient Mayan archaeological sites such as Palenque and Chichen Itza, passing through the impoverished interior of southeastern Mexico along the way.

Lopez Obrador, an anti-establishment leftist widely known as "AMLO", says the passenger and freight railroad will kick-start economic development in the region.

But it has faced resistance from activists and some indigenous communities over the lack of clarity on the environmental impact.

However, the region's communities are overwhelmingly in favor, according to official results from a referendum on the issue -- which was itself the subject of criticism.

Hundreds of indigenous villages held communal councils on the project over the weekend, while 84 municipalities in the train's path voted in a more classic ballot-box referendum.

"There is a generalized consensus, unanimous, in support of building and implementing the Maya Train program," said Adelfo Regino, head of Mexico's National Indigenous Peoples' Institute.

"We have 93,142 Mexicans who voted 'Yes', equivalent to 92.3 percent of the vote," said the deputy minister for development, Diana Alvarez.

The government acknowledged many indigenous communities also demanded attention for more pressing issues, such as schools, health centers, roads and protection of their environment and archaeological sites.

Lopez Obrador said the first tender for the project would be launched in early January.

The president's opponents have accused him of using such referenda -- or "people's consultations," as he calls them -- to rubber-stamp his stance on controversial issues with no oversight by electoral authorities.

Other decisions he has made by referendum include building a new oil refinery in his native Tabasco state and canceling a $13-billion airport for Mexico City that was already one-third complete and replacing it with a rival project.

Archaeologists have discovered a cave filled with hundreds of artifacts beneath the ruins of the Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico, the lead researcher on the project said Monday, calling the find "incredible."

The massive cave is a "scientific treasure," Mexican archaeologist Guillermo de Anda told a news conference.

He said it could help scientists better understand the origins, lives and beliefs of the residents of Chichen Itza, a stunning city of stone in the Yucatan peninsula that was founded sometime around 750 AD.

The cave was found about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Temple of Kukulcan, the giant stepped pyramid that dominates the center of Chichen Itza.

It sits about 24 meters (80 feet) underground, and contains multiple chambers connected by narrow passages -- often so narrow that researchers had to crawl or drag themselves through them, De Anda said.

His team has explored about 460 meters of the cave so far, and does not know how far it stretches, he added.

The relics found include seven incense burners shaped like the Mayan rain god Chaac, which researchers believe were offerings meant to bring rain.

De Anda said locals had actually discovered the cave more than 50 years ago.

But the archaeologist sent to explore the site at the time by the National Institute of Anthropology and History decided for unknown reasons to seal the entrance with stones, and filed only a brief report.

De Anda had seen the report, but did not give it much thought -- until he happened upon the entrance to the cave last year while exploring another site nearby.

"What we found there was incredible, and completely untouched," he said.

The residents of Chichen Itza probably considered the cave "the bowels of the gods," he added.

His team believes the largest incense burners date from around 700 to 1000 AD.

The indigenous Mayas who inhabit the area today warned his team that a venomous coral snake guarded the site.

And researchers did in fact find just such a specimen, which blocked their access to the cave for four days, De Anda said.

At locals' behest, they performed a six-hour purification ritual before entering the cave.

De Anda's team plans to continue exploring the cave. Rather than remove the artifacts they find, they will study them on site, he said.

“… All this is to say that some of you are losing friends in death, and it seems out of sync in this new promised energy. I know who's here, who is listening and reading, and it would seem inappropriate that you would lose a friend or loved one at this point in time. Now, there are some in the room who have recently lost those they've loved, and it has seemed especially hurtful since these dear ones didn't seem "ready to go" just yet. In my partner's case, he lost a team member in the Kryon work, and I can remember in the moments when he found out, he was mad at me. He said to me, "It's unfair, not correct, and inappropriate! This man was a Lightworker doing good things. We needed him! He was a healer. Others needed him. He seemed to have so many years left, and now he's gone." Two weeks ago, my partner lost still another friend. He is not alone, for many around him including those in the room are experiencing the same thing.

For some, it's the year of loss. So I want to give you some explanations. I wish to tell you clearly what we see now that we couldn't tell you before. UN shines spotlight on dying indigenous languages

United Nations (United States) (AFP) - There's Ojibwe in Canada, Ami in Australia and Ayapanec in Mexico: these are among the world's nearly 2,700 indigenous languages at risk of disappearing unless new initiatives are taken to revive them, UN officials say.

The United Nations is hoping to raise awareness of the cultural loss with the launch this week of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, a yearlong project to help protect these ancient mother tongues.

"2019 must serve as a turning point in our collective determination to save indigenous languages and those who speak them," Maria Fernanda Espinosa, the president of the General Assembly, told a UN gathering on Friday.

Out of the roughly 7,600 languages spoken worldwide, 2,680 indigenous languages are in danger and many are disappearing at an alarming rate, according to UN officials.

"Every two weeks, there is an indigenous language that disappears, so it is a pretty large toll indeed," said Ernesto Ottone-Ramirez, an assistant director at the UN's cultural agency UNESCO.

In 2003, the last fluent speaker of Akkala Saami, spoken in Russia's northern Kola peninsula, died, a few years before Tefvic Esenc Eyak disappeared in 2008 with the death of Marie Smith Jones in Alaska.

At a ceremony in Paris this week, eight-year-old Odeskkun Thusky spoke in his native Algonquin from Canada's First Nation regions in Quebec and Ontario.

"It's important to speak this language because our language here is dying and we want more people to speak it so our language doesn't die," Thusky told AFP.

Canada, home to around 630 First Nation tribes comprising 1.4 million people, has promised funds to help revitalize several languages.

In Australia, more than 250 aboriginal languages were spoken when the British first started to settle in 1788, but only around 120 are still spoken today.

In a bid to hold on to them, some Northern Territory schools now provide education in both English and an aboriginal language.

First human remains found in El Salvador's 'Mayan Pompeii'

Human remains have been discovered for the first time in El Salvador's Joya de Ceren, a city buried by a volcanic eruption more than 1,400 years ago and sometimes dubbed the "Mayan Pompeii," the ministry of culture said Thursday.

A skeleton, which was in poor condition, was discovered at the beginning of November, buried with an obsidian knife at the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site located about 20 miles (35 kilometers) north of the capital San Salvador.

The person "probably lived in the city but was not killed by the eruption" of the Loma Caldera volcano, archaeologist Michelle Toledo said.

Toledo added that researchers believed the remains date to the Late Classic period of Mesoamerica because of the presence of fine white tephra, known as "Tierra Blanca Joven" (young white earth) resulting from the volcanic eruption around 535 AD.

The cataclysmic eruption of the Loma Caldera volcano destroyed numerous Mayan sites and was responsible for the formation of Lake Ilopango, with an area of ​​27.8 square miles (72 square kilometers).

The remains are the first to be discovered in more than 40 years of excavations.

Archaeologists find fossils, Mayan relics in giant underwater cave in Mexico

Mexico City (AFP) - Archaeologists who have been exploring the world's largest underwater cave -- recently discovered in Mexico -- presented their findings Monday, including fossils of giant sloths and an elaborate shrine to the Mayan god of commerce.

Researchers discovered last month that two large networks of underwater caves in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, the Sac Actun and Dos Ojos networks, are in fact connected, forming the largest such structure on Earth.

Diving with SCUBA gear, they have been exploring the ancient relics left in the caves over the millenia, in a project sponsored by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

Researchers believe the water level in the caves has fluctuated over time, and that they were a source of water in times of severe drought -- a sometimes perilous one.

Some of the animals and humans who ventured inside never made it out alive. Today, their remains are a treasure trove for scientists, enabling them to piece together bits of the cave's history dating all the way back to the Pleistocene epoch (2.6 million to 11,700 years ago).

The animal remains include gomphotheres -- an extinct elephant-like animal -- as well as giant sloths and bears, archaeologists told a press conference.

Then there are the artefacts left inside by humans: burnt human bones, ceramics, wall etchings and more.

"It is very unlikely that there is another site in the world with these characteristics. There is an impressive amount of archaeological artefacts inside, and the level of preservation is also impressive," said Guillermo de Anda, an underwater archaeologist.

The relics include a shrine to the Mayan god of war and commerce, with a staircase accessed through a sink-hole in the middle of the jungle.

Many other of the hundreds of sink-holes that connect to the cave have elaborate signs of ritual activity around them, archaeologists said.

The ancient Mayans viewed caves, "and especially ones that led to water, as extremely sacred places," the INAH said.

Greetings, dear ones, I am Kryon of Magnetic Service. We wish to take a moment to honor the science of today, of yesterday, which was presented in this place [speaking of the presentations during the conference].

For 26 years, I have given you messages over and over that may have sounded odd to you. When I've given you truths that were not yet validated, or told you things that were not the mainstream of thought, they were just things that had no basis. Year after year, slowly some of these things have come to fruition, but only now are you starting to see the Kryon message validated in this way. I want to fill in the gaps, just a little, in this final message of this day.

The science, as taught this weekend, is complete and is accurate. For those who have not been here who are listening to this, it sounds much like it was torn from a page of the many Kryon messages over time. We told you years ago about how long humanity really had been here. We gave you the timeline of humanity since what we called the seeding 200,000 years ago. We told you stories, perhaps, that you did not believe at that time. We gave you numbers to look at, and we even gave you unknown history to consider. Here it is right now, being validated in front of your eyes F the charts, the graphs, the research.

The scientists come only to the edge of truth, giving you what they can, and for good reason. The truths they speak of are things that need to be validated, proved, and researched. They can't do that yet, but they can take you to the edge of validation by showing you the evidence. Proof is more elusive, and science wants proof. So they present the research that piles up to conclusions of common sense and connecting the dots.

Indeed, it has been shown over and over that research would indicate that you may not have biologically come from anything here on Earth. The missing link remains missing. We said that years ago. We told you it would always be missing because you did not come from anything here, and now these words are being echoed in the very teachings of these last two days. These science teachers take you to the edge, but they don't tell you "who" might have been involved in your beginning. The esoterics of it all is my job, and I will start to complete the picture, which then will marry itself to the science.

The scientists are telling you about fractals. Fractals are the way of all physics, of all biology. If you ask a physicist about fractals, they will give you all of the mathematics - big to little, bigger, smaller - and all of it represents fractals of sameness. Biologists know that everything goes from small to large in fractals. It's simply the way of things. The teacher Gregg [Gregg Braden] comes up with the research that is absolutely, 100% accurate when he starts discussing the potential of time repeating itself, something you've heard in conversation all your life. It's obvious that it, indeed, does seem to repeat, but could it be that it does so in ways that you haven't even discovered? He's right.

I want to take it to another level. I sat in Turkey and gave you a message of unknown history. It's a good place to have given that channel. We told you you would discover civilizations that you have no record of, and that you don't believe have happened. The window is 18 years to the center [which is December 21, 2012] and 18 years out of it. You're still in the last 18 years. You are still in the residual energy of the last long count. The time fractals are still there, and there are still major potentials being felt. Indeed, they still could happen, but there's more to this, and that's what I want to tell you. That's just one thing of many that will cause this time to be different. Let's ask the main question again: What makes it so different this time?

You're centered up on the prediction of the ancients and the end of the fundamental cycle of 25,630 years. This alone gives this time a special energy, but that's not all of it. Long ago, I told you who seeded you and we spoke about Human consciousness evolution beginning now, where it has been stagnant for so long. We told you about the Pleiadians being the source of your current DNA (and the missing link). We gave you a channelling called “The Compassion Factor” for you to know what the real difference is, and what's really going to change humanity - compassion. However, you're so linear and so 3D that you're saying, "Will DNA chemistry change? Can we watch it change?" The answer is of course it's going to change, but not like you think.

Metaphor coming: The farmer has a field that he has worked for years. He comes home and announces, "There's a new kind of crop. There's a wonderful kind of crop and it's going to be growing soon." So are you going to go out and see if the dirt has changed? No. It's the seeds that have changed. DNA is not what you think, and this information was given to you yesterday [referring to the information from Dr. Bruce Lipton]. DNA is not a static, unchanging group of chemicals. Instead, it's the framework blueprint for the Human body; it's the dirt that the evolution seeds grow in, and the seeds represent your consciousness, not the chemistry. So don't study the chemicals looking for Human evolution. Instead, study the consciousness shift of the planet. But that's not all.

I want you to start using spiritual logic, something that will be more obvious in time. The Pleiadians are your spiritual-seed creative parents. Simple. Most of the earth will not believe that. Your accepted creation story sounds just like it, and even the timing is the same, but it can't involve an E.T., to be believed by most. The very thought of extra-terrestrials always involves those who come and conquer you or hurt you. This is your bias and is a reflection of your own Human consciousness and what your brief history has been. You do it, so you expect all life forms to do it.

We've said this before. The Pleiadians have a civilization that is millions of years earlier than yours, dear ones. What do you think that might that look like? It is a very advanced civilization that has gone through what you've gone through. They have a very high, wise consciousness that can even control physics through thought, and they came here with a divine plan to give you the knowledge of dark and light and the free choice of duality so that you can work the puzzle. Their God is your God - the creative source. That's what they did here, and they are like your biological seed parents, and they care. They must be hands-off, but they care.

The Pleiadians themselves gave a time limit for your growth, and it's the one you are looking at right now. It is the start and end of the precession of the equinoxes, the middle of the fundamental cycle, 25,630 years. You had several civilizations that started and stopped during that time, and if you hadn't made it by now, you weren't going to make it at all. This was the last chance.

You started to change in the last decades, and by the late '80s it was obvious that you were going to shift. The Harmonic Convergence of 1987 was a turning point. I then came in 1989. At the beginning of 1992, you dissolved the Cold War. It was starting to happen!

When the Pleiadians seeded you, they set up a system in case you would make it, and we have given that information to you before. It's called the nodes and the nulls of the planet. The nodes and the nulls just sat there dormant as time capsules, waiting for the right time to activate. That time has arrived, and we have identified all of them, and they are starting to open.

"Kryon, we have never heard of this before. This is so esoteric, and we have no knowledge of this. There are no ancient writings that have indicated it either." Dear one, use your logic. Of course you didn't know about it, because you hadn't reached that finish line of December 21, 2012! This was information for those who would make it, not for an earth that was always on the edge of destroying itself. We saw what was happening where you disarmed the third world war of your civilization. The proof that it was a last-minute turnaround is that everyone is still expecting it! It's almost like waiting for "the other shoe to drop," right?

I want to ask you a logical question. When you have children, and it's time for them to ride a bicycle, what is the process? First, you get them a bike. Then what is next? Do you hand them the bike and say, “Good luck, kid! I know you may fall over and hurt yourself, but that's just the way bikes work.”? No! Loving parents don't do that. Instead, you give them training wheels and you work with them. You hold the bicycle until they get the feel of it; you run alongside the bike with the training wheels engaged until they've got it right. You smile with glee as they get the balance that you know every child will eventually have, and then they pedal off without you as you cheer them on.

Well, dear ones, the fundamental fractal is at hand, and the training wheels are the nodes and the nulls. They open, activate, pair up, and begin to wipe away some of the negativity and darkness of this planet in order to give you a fast track to a higher consciousness. We've been telling you this for years - how they work and how they remove the old energy via the Crystalline Grid, the Gaia Grid. This entire conference is about remembering, and yet many say, "Remembering what?" I'll tell you what to remember. I want you to remember the original information the Pleiadians gave you when you got here! That's what you are remembering, old soul, and that is what this node is about to pour out into the Crystalline Grid. It begins to erase the remembrance of war and suffering from this planet. It's going to change the time fractals themselves, almost a restart for the Crystalline Grid.

What you must know is that the Crystalline Grid is partially responsible for remembering the old fractals of time. These are the fractals that say history will repeat itself, even though you are creating a new future and voiding them. When they start to be erased and reframed, it's like a restart of the energy of humanity.

I want to ask you, wouldn't you do that for your children? Doesn't it make sense that the Pleiadians, who brought you the beautiful energy of the love of God, would also provide help to get through this new and unknown evolution of consciousness? Don't you think they would give you the training wheels? Doesn't it start to make esoteric sense that this new fundamental cycle beginning would carry something beautiful if you made it? Well, here it is, and it has arrived, and this cycle beginning is different!

Don't let anybody tell you, "Here it comes again. We are overdue for war, so it's coming!" Just because you did it before doesn't mean it's guaranteed to happen again. This cycle is different.

That has been the message for 26 years, not necessarily presented in those terms, but it was the message right away in my first publication in Chapter One of Kryon Book One: "There will be no World War III. There will be no Armageddon. The old prophecies will not happen." Twenty-six years ago, we saw your shift coming. The fundamental fractal is recalibrating in readiness to start again with a different energy set, and this is why you're not going to repeat the past.

The timing of the training wheels duration is up to you. You have free choice and can make it as difficult or as easy as you want. Even with training wheels, you may still fall over, but with the help brought to you in this new energy, you'll get right back up and keep going. It can be a long haul for an older humanity to start a new system of consciousness. I'll say it again: Two steps forward, one step back. It's part of a new Human and you're in the right place at the right time.

Don't you feel it? What you heard today and what you heard yesterday is the paradigm of truth. Doesn't it ring true that something special and different is going on? And I'll tell you what it is: You are going on! You have a higher consciousness because you sit here asking yourself, “What am I feeling that is so different?” The difficulties you've been through regarding the recalibrations we've talked about are all part of this slow shift into a new consciousness. You are going to sail right through the old fractal and potentials!

Congratulations, dear old soul, for coming into this planet at this time, knowing these would be difficult times. You weren't going to miss the party, were you?

Pope Francis asks indigenous Mexicans for forgiveness

San Cristóbal de las Casas (Mexico) (AFP) - Pope Francis reached out to Mexico's long-marginalized indigenous population, asking for forgiveness over their exclusion as he celebrated an open-air mass in native languages in impoverished Chiapas state.

While Chiapas is the country's least Catholic state, tens of thousands of people packed into a sports field for the mass celebrated, under special papal decree, in the indigenous languages of the region.

Women wearing colorful embroidered dresses led biblical readings and hymns in the Chol, Tzotzil and Tzeltal -- all languages of the indigenous Maya people of the region.

The pope himself said a few words in one of the native languages and cited Popol Vuh, an ancient Mayan text.

"On many occasions, in a systematic and organized way, your people have been misunderstood and excluded from society," the 79-year-old Argentine-born pontiff said.

"Some have considered your values, culture and traditions to be inferior. Others, intoxicated by power, money and market trends, have stolen your lands or contaminated them. How sad this is," he said.

"How worthwhile it would be for each of us to examine our conscience and learn to say, 'Forgive me!'"

The pope said Monday that the planet had much to learn from indigenous groups, especially their harmony with nature amid "the greatest environmental crises in world history."

Around 30 percent of Chiapas's population does not speak Spanish, the language of the colonial power that conquered Mexico in the 16th century, exploited indigenous people and sought to convert them to Christianity.

Francis already apologized for the church's colonial-era crimes during a trip to Bolivia last year.

While Mexico's early 20th century revolution sought to end land oligarchies, indigenous groups remain among the poorest in the country to this day and feel abandoned by the government.

The continuing plight of indigenous groups triggered a revolt by Zapatista rebels who sought more autonomy for them in 1994.

Losing flock

"Long live the pope of the indigenous people!" some shouted from the roofs of their homes as the pope arrived at the field, where a replica of the yellow facade of the city's cathedral served as background to the large stage.

"I'm very happy because few people speak Spanish in my village and now they can receive the body of Christ in their language," said Mariano Perez, a 33-year-old Tzotzil who attended the mass wearing a rancher hat.

While Mexico is the world's second most populous Catholic nation after Brazil, with 82 percent of its population of 122 million identifying with the religion, only 58 percent are loyal to the Vatican in Chiapas.

"If the church is to stop the hemorrhaging of indigenous (populations) in Chiapas and across Latin America, it must offer more masses in indigenous languages and recruit indigenous priests who are very small in numbers," Andrew Chesnut, religious studies professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, told AFP.

The pope's visit comes in the middle of an intense, five-day trip that he has used to speak out against crime and corruption.

After the mass Francis visited San Cristobal's cathedral.

He stopped in front of the tomb of Samuel Ruiz, a controversial bishop who defended the Mayan people and acted as mediator between the government and the Zapatista guerrillas.

Lingering tensions over the state's social problems reemerged last week, when protestors spray-painted the words "we don't want the pope, we want justice" on the cathedral's yellow walls.

But the demonstrators dispersed over the weekend and authorities repainted the cathedral.

"We know that the government wants to hide things or make it seem that everything is all right," said Octavio Gomez, a 45-year-old Tzeltal from a nearby village.

Family: basis of 'healthy society'

After the mass, the pope flew by helicopter to the nearby capital of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutierrez, to attend an event focused on family issues at a packed stadium.

Francis heard stories about marriage and divorce, and a single mother who had a chance to abort, but decided to keep the child.

"You were very brave," the pope told her.

Francis said family was "the basis of any healthy society" and warned about the "pretense of modernity" and ideologies that "destroy" it.

The pope heads Tuesday to the western state of Michoacan, where farmers rose up in 2013 to crush a cultish drug cartel, before ending his trip on Wednesday in the northern border city of Ciudad Juarez.
