'Meteorite' smashes into Nicaraguan capital

Managua (AFP) - A mysterious explosion that rocked Nicaragua's crowded capital Managua, creating a large crater, appears to have been caused by a small meteorite, officials said Sunday.

Amazingly, in a sprawling city of 1.2 million people, the impact near the international airport did not cause any known injuries, but it did leave a crater measuring 12 meters (39 feet) across and was felt throughout the capital late on Saturday.

Nicaraguan authorities believe it was a piece of the small asteroid dubbed "2014 RC," which passed very close to Earth on Sunday and was estimated by astronomers to be about 20 meters big, or the size of a house.

"We are convinced that this was a meteorite. We have seen the crater from the impact," said Wilfredo Strauss of the Seismic Institute.

The meteorite appeared to have hurtled into a wooded area near the airport around midnight and the hit was so large that it registered on the instruments Strauss's organization uses to size up earthquakes.

"You can see two waves: first, a small seismic wave when the meteorite hit earth, and then another stronger one, which is the impact of the sound," he said.

Government officials and experts visited the impact site on Sunday.

One of them, William Martinez, said it was not yet clear if the meteorite burned up completely or if it had been blasted into the soil.

"You can see mirror-like spots on the sides of the crater from where the meteorite power-scraped the walls," Martinez said.

Government spokeswoman, First Lady Rosario Murillo, said Managua would be in contact with the US Geological Service to try to get more information about "this fascinating event" in the Central American nation, one of Latin America's poorest countries.

People who live near the crater told local media they heard a blast they took for an explosion, and that liquid, sand and dust were blown through the air, which smelled like something had burned.

There were no reported injuries because the impact was in a wooded spot, and flights at the airport were not affected.

NASA said last week that the asteroid 2014 RC, at the time of closest approach, would be approximately one-tenth the distance from the center of Earth to the moon, or about 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometers).

It had been projected to be roughly over New Zealand at the time of its closest approach, which astronomers had calculated would be on Sunday at about 1818 GMT.

SCIENTISTS and locals have been left stunned after a giant crack, almost one kilometre long, appeared in remote farmland in Mexico.

The eight-metre deep trench opened up last week and severed Highway 26 between Hermosillo and the coast in the north of the country.

Filmed by a drone controlled by Hermosillo Desde El Cielo, the spectacular footage takes viewers along the length of the trench, which is up to five metres wide.

It has baffled locals, as well as officials, with many speculating that an earthquake at the San Andreas Fault may have been the cause.

However, geologists at the University of Sonora, have blamed collapse of land on an underground stream.

Farm workers and vehicles have been forced to go around the area due to the unstable ground. Another crack was reported to have opened up in same area.

Dulce Nombre (Costa Rica) (AFP) - Call her the miracle lady on the hill -- one with a brain aneurysm whose healing was declared a miracle, clearing the way for the late John Paul II to become a saint.

Floribeth Mora, a 50-year-old Costa Rican, has now become a sort of religious icon herself.

Sick people flock every day to her home, a small dwelling full of crucifixes. She tells them to have faith.

Three years ago, doctors told Mora she had an untreatable brain aneurysm and sent her home to wait for death.

But she survived, leaving doctors perplexed. On July 5 last year, Pope Francis called Mora's case a miracle, making it possible for John Paul II to be canonized on April 27.

Mora lives in a small house on a hill in Dulce Nombre de Cartago, 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Costa Rica's capital San Jose.

The doorway features a large portrait of the late Polish pope, candles and flowers, along with an image of the Virgin Mary and copies of medical documents certifying her health turn-around.

Mora has a magazine with Karol Wojtyla on the cover and rarely lets go of it.

To one man whose wife is dying, she says, "Pray a lot to John Paul II, as I did."

Dressed in a light blue blouse that sets off her fair skin and brown hair, Mora welcomed a team from AFP amid the bustle of preparing for her trip to Rome, receiving sick people and running two small family businesses.

'Don't be afraid'

Mora remembers the day in April 2011 when she got her bad news. A neurosurgeon said she had an aneurysm on the right side of her brain.

"The left side of my body became paralyzed. I could not move my hands, could not hold a spoon or a glass. I would drop everything," she said.

After a series of tests, doctors told her that her case was hopeless, and sent her home to await her demise.

"Her life was fading away, but she always prayed to the pope," said Father Sergio, her spiritual adviser.

Lying in bed on May 1, 2011, Mora watched John Paul II's beatification.

"At eight o'clock the next morning, I heard a voice in my room that said, 'Get up. Don't be afraid,'" she recounted.

She said that from the magazine with the picture of the late pontiff, she saw hands appear, urging her to get out of bed.

"The Lord took away my fear and agony, and gave me the peace and certainty that I was healthy," Mora said.

Gradually, she recovered and in November of that year, an MRI "confirmed what I had been saying -- that I was healthy. It was the work of God," she said, her voiced filled with emotion.

And what does the neurosurgeon Alejandro Vargas have to say?

"If I cannot explain it from a medical standpoint, something non-medical happened," he said. "I can believe it was a miracle."

The 'crazy lady'

Mora relayed her story in February 2012 on the late pope's web page.

"I wanted the world to realize the grandeur of God. But I never imagined the magnitude that this was going to take on," she said.

Three months later, the Vatican contacted her, and Mora traveled to Rome. Tests confirmed she was totally healthy.

Her devotion to John Paul II began when he visited Costa Rica in 1983.

"He exuded holiness. To see him, at the age of 19, had an impact on my life. I turned to him in the darkest moments of my illness so he would intercede with God on my behalf."

John Paul II, who died in April 2005, was beatified after a miracle was proclaimed involving a French nun. But a second miracle was needed for him to be canonized, or made a saint.

It is a miracle not everyone believes in, even in this country where the Catholic faith is classified as "official," which is rare in Latin America.

"In the supermarket, in the street, people say, 'There goes that crazy lady!' But the crazy lady is healthy because God cured me. God bless my madness because I can share with my family," says Mora, who is married and has four children and six grandchildren.

Born in a poor neighborhood of San Jose, she says she is the same person she always was.

"She has not changed, although many people come to see her," says a neighbor, Flor Varela.

In Mora's house, a distraught man is on the verge of tears.

"My wife no longer speaks. We do not know if she sees us, if she hears us. I come with faith for you to take a petition to the pope," said Jose Torres, a small-scale farmer.

"Nothing is impossible for God," answers Mora. She is seated on a sofa in the living room. A trunk there is full of letters for her to take to Rome.

Let me take you to the cellular division process. We've said this before, but you need to hear this to understand how it works. A cell is ready to divide. The Human body is designed to rejuvenate... all tissue. You've been told that there's some tissue that does not rejuvenate, but that is incorrect. It all rejuvenates at different speeds at different times and in different ways. It rejuvenates. So now you know that the Human body is designed to live a long time. Unfortunately, the energy that you have created on this planet and what you've gone through, has beat it up. You don't live much more than 80 years. That was not the design.

The Biblical personalities were sometimes prophets and sometimes masters and sometimes just there... and lived for hundreds of years. Did they really? Or perhaps this is that just a metaphor? Did they get that right in the Bible without a error in transcription? I'm going to tell you the truth. It's very accurate. Thousands of years ago you lived a very long time, Lemurian. If you knew your lifespan, you'd gasp. But not anymore. Instructions have been given over time to DNA, literally, by the energy of the planet... en energy that you have created through consciousness.

A cell divides. Right before it divides, it needs the blueprint to clone itself. The blueprint is available from the stem cell. The stem cell gets its information from the quantum part of the DNA, which has never changed since you were born. It's remained static, since nothing has ever changed it... and the fact that you don't believe it's changeable and have just accepted aging. There's not a conscious effort to do anything with it, and it just lays there like it always did.

The diving cell "talks" to the stem cell and says, "Do the same thing you always did? Change anything?" And the stem cell talks to the cell that is dividing, saying, "Make another one just the same." Then you rejuvenate just like the last one, accepting everything you received when you were born. ..."

It’s been called the Devil's Triangle, Limbo of the Lost, Twilight Zone, and most famously the Bermuda Triangle.

The semi-triangular area surrounded by Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Florida is known for its voracious appetite for planes and boats. The legend began at 2:10 p.m. Dec. 5, 1945, when, reportedly, experienced aviators lifted off on a routine training mission, in supposedly  crystal clear weather. Upon becoming disoriented, the pilots of Flight 19 radioed for help and then disappeared.

Bizarre explanations for this and other vanishing acts include:  aliens hiding under the sea, a portal leading to another dimension, and ship-size methane gas bubbles.

There is a logical answer to the disappearances, however. The Triangle is heavily traveled, and proportionally sees no more accidents than other areas. The region is vulnerable to unpredictable storms. And, according to the Navy, the Gulf Stream there "is extremely swift and turbulent and can quickly erase any evidence of a disaster." Finally, the sea in that area is up to 30,000 feet deep.

As for Flight 19, the pilots were actually trainees, and the weather was far from crystal clear that day.

On March 13, the day his papacy was announced, the country's winning lottery number coincided with the four last numbers of his soccer membership. Team members are conviced this is a divine sign, and they will win this year's championship.

In fact, the prophets become even more divinely inspired and their wisdom becomes even more profound.

You're going to lose a pope soon. I have no clock. Soon to us can mean anything to you. The one who replaces him may surprise you, for his particular organization will be in survival mode at that point in time. That is to say that fewer and fewer are interested in starting the priesthood. Fewer and fewer young people are interested in the organization, and the new pope must make changes to keep his church alive. That means that his organization will remain, but with a more modern look at what truly is before all of you in a new energy. It is not the fall of the church. It is instead the recalibration of the divinity inside that would match the worship that goes on. It's a win-win situation. The new pope will have a difficult time, since the old guard will still be there. There could even be an assassination attempt, such is the way the old energy dies hard. That is number one. Watch for it. It's a change in the way spiritual systems work. It's a realignment of spiritual systems that resound to a stronger truth that is Human driven, rather than prophet driven.…”

PARIS — It was an animal that puzzled Charles Darwin, who wondered how on Earth a large mammal that looked a bit like a wolf and a bit like a fox had arrived on barren islands nearly 500 kilometres (300 miles) from the mainland.

Now, say biologists, the mystery of the now-extinct Falkland Islands wolf may have been resolved.

First spotted by Europeans in the 17th century, the wolf is -- was -- the Falklands' only native terrestrial mammal, tucking in to penguins and other small prey for its food.

Since Darwin's musings in 1834, theories have proliferated to explain how the brown-furred carnivore ended up in such a remote place. Was it brought there by Man? Had it floated over on an ice raft?

A team of scientists from Australia, Argentina and Chile have taken a crack at the riddle, the journal Nature Communications reported on Tuesday.

They teased ancient DNA out of museum specimens of Dusicyon australis and compared it with the genetic code of a similar-sized extinct mainland canine, the South American maned wolf (Dusicyon avus).

The two species have almost identical genomes, and the chronology indicates that they diverged only during the last Ice Age, which ended some 10,000-20,000 years ago, the scientists found.

At that time, global sea levels were far lower than today, and the coastline of what is now southern Argentina and the eastern tip of Chile stretched much farther into the ice-bound South Atlantic.

"The Falkland Islands wolf colonised via a narrow, shallow marine strait, potentially while it was frozen over," the study suggests.

After becoming established, the wolf became isolated when the Ice Age ended and sea levels rose, turning this distant spur of land into an archipelago.

By the time Darwin saw it, the wolf was being ruthlessly hunted for its fur and to protect livestock.

Semi-tame, it would come trustingly to ranchers who would hold out a piece of meat in one hand and a knife in the other with which to stab it.

"Within a very few years after these islands shall have become regularly settled, in all probability this fox will be classed with the dodo, as an animal which has perished from the face of the Earth," the great naturalist had written.

Within four decades, his prediction had become true. The species was wiped out in the wild in 1876, and two wolves that were shipped to London as curiosities died without offspring.
