“… The Shift in Human Nature

You're starting to see integrity change. Awareness recalibrates integrity, and the Human Being who would sit there and take advantage of another Human Being in an old energy would never do it in a new energy. The reason? It will become intuitive, so this is a shift in Human Nature as well, for in the past you have assumed that people take advantage of people first and integrity comes later. That's just ordinary Human nature.

In the past, Human nature expressed within governments worked like this: If you were stronger than the other one, you simply conquered them. If you were strong, it was an invitation to conquer. If you were weak, it was an invitation to be conquered. No one even thought about it. It was the way of things. The bigger you could have your armies, the better they would do when you sent them out to conquer. That's not how you think today. Did you notice?

Any country that thinks this way today will not survive, for humanity has discovered that the world goes far better by putting things together instead of tearing them apart. The new energy puts the weak and strong together in ways that make sense and that have integrity. Take a look at what happened to some of the businesses in this great land (USA). Up to 30 years ago, when you started realizing some of them didn't have integrity, you eliminated them. What happened to the tobacco companies when you realized they were knowingly addicting your children? Today, they still sell their products to less-aware countries, but that will also change.

What did you do a few years ago when you realized that your bankers were actually selling you homes that they knew you couldn't pay for later? They were walking away, smiling greedily, not thinking about the heartbreak that was to follow when a life's dream would be lost. Dear American, you are in a recession. However, this is like when you prune a tree and cut back the branches. When the tree grows back, you've got control and the branches will grow bigger and stronger than they were before, without the greed factor. Then, if you don't like the way it grows back, you'll prune it again! I tell you this because awareness is now in control of big money. It's right before your eyes, what you're doing. But fear often rules. …”

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - Flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains have claimed six lives in southeast Brazil, firefighters said Saturday.

Footage on social media showed streets in Espirito Santo state turned into rivers and cars being swept away by raging, muddy water.

In one clip, the water almost reaches the roof of a gas station.

The fatalities happened in the towns of Iconha and Alfredo Chaves, with three deaths in each town. In the latter, two of the victims were elderly people who died after a landslide engulfed their home in mud.

Officials said that in just 24 hours, Alfredo Chaves recorded the rainfall it normally gets in the entire month of January.

The mayor of Iconha told the newspaper A Gazeta that nearly all of the town's shops were destroyed.

Monster Hurricane Irma batters Caribbean islands

Yahoo – AFP, Laurent Czerniejewski with Cécile Azzaro in Paris, 6 September 2017

This satellite image obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) shows Hurricane Irma at 1145 UTC on September 6, 2017

Monster Hurricane Irma slammed into Caribbean islands on Wednesday after making landfall in Barbuda, packing ferocious winds and causing major flooding in low-lying areas.

As the rare Category Five storm barreled its way across the Caribbean, it brought gusting winds of up to 185 miles per hour (294 kilometers per hour), weather experts said.

After making landfall just before 0600 GMT in Barbuda, part of the twin island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, the hurricane swept on to French-run Saint Barthelemy, also known as St Barts, and Saint Martin, an island divided between France and the Netherlands.

Hurricane Irma has already caused "major damage" on several Caribbean islands, said French Overseas Territories Minister Annick Girardin, who announced she was leaving for the island of Guadeloupe on Wednesday.

The French weather office said Irma was "a historic hurricane (with) an unprecedented intensity over the Atlantic," with a French minister saying it had already "caused major damage" across St Barts and Saint Martin.

'Very scary'

Coastal areas were being "battered extremely violently" by the sea, with the weather office logging winds of 244 kph (151 mph) before its monitoring equipment was destroyed by the hurricane.

With the islands on maximum alert ahead of the arrival of the strongest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic, France had raised the alarm over the fate of some 7,000 people who refused to seek shelter.

Dutch national broadcaster NOS also reported "enormous damage" on Saint Martin, with residents speaking of widespread destruction.

Saba Island and St Eustatius, two other Dutch-run territories to the south, were also hit.

Hurricane Irma made landfall in Barbuda but is making its way north west towards
the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

'I'm just praying'

The massive hurricane, which is beating a path northwest, was also expected to hit the larger French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique.

With forecasters warning of catastrophe, including surges of up to 25 feet (7.6 metres) above normal tide levels, people evacuated tourist areas, stocked up on provisions, and packed into shelters across an area stretching as far north as Florida.

Irma, which is expected to stay in the region for days, follows hot on the heels of Hurricane Harvey which devastated swathes of Texas in late August.

Packed into shelters, many frightened residents were calling in to local radio stations to voice their concerns.

"I am just praying to God. Everything happens for a reason," said a woman called Kazia living on Antigua, where people were hunkering down in the dark after officials turned off the island's power supply as a safety precaution.

In mid-afternoon winds speeds there were logged at up to 90 mph.

Shelters packed

Category Five is the highest on the scale for hurricanes in the Atlantic and Caribbean, and Irma is expected to reach the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by nightfall Wednesday.

Hurricanes of this category are rare. They can tear off roofing, shatter windows, uproot palm trees and turn them into deadly projectiles.

Map showing the forecast track of Hurricane Irma across the Caribbean

In Guadeloupe, schools and government offices in have been closed while hospitals stocked up on medicines, food and drinking water.

Across the island, shelters were packed with a mixture of local families and tourists.

"We came here to protect our little two-year-old boy," said Ludovic, a tourist who only gave his first name. "We hadn't prepared for this disaster scenario."

Florida is expecting to face the brunt of the storm from Friday night.

As the hurricane approached, US President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, authorising federal funding to help local authorities respond.

"My team, which has done, and is doing, such a good job in Texas, is already in Florida. No rest for the weary!" he tweeted.

The Washington Post reported that Trump's luxury property on Saint Martin had been badly hit, without giving details.

Meanwhile British billionaire Richard Branson said he would be hunkering down in his concrete wine cellar to face Hurricane Irma as it hurtles closer to his private island of Necker in the British Virgin Islands.

Threat to Puerto Rico, Florida

Florida Governor Rick Scott said Irma, which comes barely a week after Harvey claimed at least 42 lives, posed "a severe threat to the entire state".

Tourists in the popular Key West islands were packing their bags on a mandatory evacuation order and were to begin leaving at sunrise on Wednesday, with a similar order for residents due to follow.

“… The Weather

Let's talk about the weather. We retreat to exactly what we told you before in this very chair. The water cycle is a cooling cycle, not a heating cycle. You're going to have more severe winters and storms. It's going to get colder. But it gets warmer before it gets colder. That is the cycle, and it has always been the cycle. You can see it in the rings of the trees and the cores of the ice. Don't let your scientists pull the political wool over your eyes for their own purposes. Start seeing these things for what they are. It's a recurring cycle based on four Earth alignment attributes, including the wobble (the precession). You're in this cycle. Prepare.

The beginnings of it will be with you from now at least until the end of the 2012 36-year window, and you can watch it work. The first thing that happens is that the ice melts at the poles, but not completely. It's the way it has happened before. As the redistribution of weight from the poles to the oceans of the earth takes place, the weight is redistributed to the crust, and that creates earthquakes. And the earthquakes that will be the most powerful are the ones that are closest to the poles. We told you that some time ago. So it's not a mystery that suddenly you have some of the most powerful earthquakes that you've ever had. Not only that, but a cooling ocean creates larger storms.

What do the conspiracists do with all this? "See? We're doomed. Here it comes," they say. "Here it comes! The end is here!" Twenty-two years ago, we gave you the information that is happening today. We told you about the weather. We told you to get ready for it, but we still haven't told you why the water cycle is needed. We've hinted at it since it is very controversial, and we'll lose many readers right here and now. Here's the prediction: The scientists are going to laugh and biologists are going to scratch their heads and roll their eyes.

The Refreshing of the Cycle of Life

When you change the temperature of the waters of the planet, it changes the life cycle of the ocean and it eventually renews itself. The life cycle of the planet has a limit to its viability over time. There has to be a refreshing of the very cycle of life, and this is what the water cycle does. Are there any places you've seen too many fish lately? Yes. Millions of salmon in the north. Odd that it was in Alaska, isn't it? Alaska is very close to the poles where the water temperature is being felt first. Oh, again the experts will tell you that this is not the reason. It's about hatcheries and rivers. But nobody predicted this, did they? Science is fast to give you reasons, but slow to give you logic in advance. They always seem to be surprised.

We are saying things we haven't said before. Again, watch for this, an actual change in the life cycle of the planet's oceans because of the water temperature shift. Biologists are going to have to start redesigning the paradigm of how everything works, including reefs, ocean bottoms, and how plankton survive and reproduce. Listen, this is not the first time that the life cycle has been refreshed! But again, this may take generations of humanity to complete. In the process, you may again lose species. This is normal. Gaia is slow, and Humans are impatient. Your textbooks may someday tell of how naive humanity was back in 2011 when they tried to blame weather changes on everything but a natural cycle. Now you know why there is a water cycle.

So what does that tell you about Gaia? Gaia is beginning the cycle of refreshing life on over-fished oceans. It tells you that in the cracks, there is love and caring about the Humans who live on the earth. There's a reason you're here. There's a plan here, and a benevolent Universe and quantum energy with intelligent design. All is there for you, precious, sacred Human Being. …”

Flash floods take dramatic toll in Lima and northern Peru

Yahoo – AFP, Luis Jaime CISNEROS, Carlos MANDUJANO, 18 March 2017

Residents of the Huachipa populous district, east of Lima, are helped on
March 17, 2017, by police and firemen rescue teams to cross over flash floods
hitting their neighbourhood and isolating its residents

Flash floods and landslides hit parts of Lima, leaving some communities cut off from roads Saturday, as others in Peru fled rising rivers, and millions fretted that they won't have drinking water.

The government announced Saturday that so far this year 72 people have died as a result of heavy rains and flash floods around the country.

Peru's geographic extremes help fuel the often deadly force of the mudslides known locally as huaycos, the indigenous Quechua word for flash flood-landslide.

The South American nation of over 30 million has plenty of extremes: its Pacific coastal deserts in the west are interrupted by the soaring Andes, famed for the Inca people and Machu Picchu in the south. Further east, Peru has hot Amazon basin lowlands.

The tremendously steep mountains combine with many rocky and sandy areas that lack the topsoil found in more temperate places, meaning fewer trees are there to stop mudslides.

After weeks of heavy rain swept toward the coast late this week, many riverbeds in coastal areas went from empty to overflowing in no time.

In Lima, some residents on the outskirts of the capital of 10 million awoke Friday to realize their bedrooms were filling with water.

On Thursday and Friday, 10 people died in a landslide in the northern town of Otuzco. Seven of them were in trucks crushed by the huge flow of earth.

Others found themselves cut off by mudslides that blocked portions of the main highway linking Lima to the center of the country.

In one dramatic scene, rescuers used zip lines to help residents of Lima's Huachipa neighborhood escape over the torrent of brown water that was once their street, as it swallowed up cars and trucks.

The floods have been triggered by the weather event known as El Nino, a warming of surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean that wreaks havoc on weather patterns every few years.

'A difficult situation'

But this year it has hit Peru particularly hard.

"It's a difficult situation, there's no doubt about it. But we have the resources" to deal with it, said President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

The government announced it would release 2.5 billion soles ($760 million) in emergency funds to rebuild affected areas.

Over half a million people were getting assistance.

While Peruvians have been dealing with huaycos for centuries, many poor residents of cities and towns build makeshift homes in areas that they may not realize could be flash-flood zones.

At times, authorities tell different groups to move, but they voice frustration that they have nowhere to go. And authorities' presence in the poorest peripheral districts, many perched on mountainsides, can be inconsistent.

The inundation came as the National Emergency Operations Center said at least 72 people have been killed in Peru this year in natural disasters. A total of 72,115 have lost their homes.

Some opposition politicians have called for the president to declare a national state of emergency, instead of local ones.

Among them were a few lawmakers urging Kuczynski to drop a bid for Lima to host the 2019 Pan-American Games so that more funds could be used for recovery efforts.

Roads become rivers

In metro Lima -- areas such as Huachipa as well as Carapongo -- locals had to form human chains to avoid being swept away to their death.

Police and firefighters also used zip lines to evacuate people from the roofs of their homes.

Frank Luis Limache, a resident of Huachipa, told El Comercio he was trapped with a group of more than 30 people.

"Please. Help us. We are trapped in here and haven't eaten since last night," he said.

The Rimac River in Lima toppled a pedestrian bridge linking El Agustino and San Juan de Lurigancho.

In the Punta Hermosa district south of Lima, a getaway of posh beach flats, the usual upscale quiet was jarred by a huayco that on Wednesday swept a farm woman, 32, far from her farm, leaving her standing awkwardly near the beach with her bloodied cow. Caked in mud, her distraught image has become one of the local symbols of this flash-flood season.

Meanwhile, city authorities slapped tight restrictions on drinking water use due to worries over the cloudiness of local river water.

Those who could afford it, pounced on supermarkets and neighborhood shops to buy drinking water, causing shortages in many areas. In less-well-off areas, people lined up to fill buckets from tanker trucks.

More than 160,000 evacuated in deadly LatAm floods

Asuncion (AFP) - More than 160,000 people have been driven from their homes in Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay in some of the worst floods in decades, which have left at least six people dead, authorities said Saturday.

The areas hardest hit in the week leading up to Christmas were in Paraguay, where four people have been killed by falling trees. President Horacio Cartes has declared a state of emergency to free up more than $3.5 million in disaster funds.

The intense rain storms, caused by an unusually strong "El Nino" pattern, have forced 130,000 Paraguayans from their homes, authorities said. In the capital Asuncion, thousands were temporarily without power.

Emergency personnel were carrying out rescue and evacuation operations, said David Arellano, the head of operations for the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN).

"We cannot abandon the thousands of families who each year are affected by flooding," Cartes said in his Christmas message.

El Nino is the name given to a weather pattern associated with a sustained period of warming in the central and eastern tropical Pacific that can spark deadly and costly climate extremes.

Last month, the UN's World Meteorological Organization warned the phenomenon was the worst in more than 15 years, and one of the strongest since 1950.

In northeastern Argentina, two people were killed and about 20,000 were evacuated from their homes by flooding caused by a rise in the level of the Uruguay River, authorities said.

Entre Rios province was the worst off with about 10,000 people displaced, most of them in Concordia, a city of some 170,000 located on the banks of the river where officials said it was the most serious flooding in 50 years.

Uruguay, which borders the river, has declared a state of emergency in several northern departments. As of Saturday, about 9,000 people were forced from their homes, according to national emergency officials.

And in Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff on Saturday flew by helicopter to survey the damage in southern Rio Grande do Sul state, where about 9,000 people have been displaced by flooding in recent days.

The federal government has released $1.7 million in emergency funds for the affected areas.

'Another tragedy': Rescued Chile miner loses home in floods

Yahoo – AFP, 28 March 2015

Santiago (AFP) - One of the Chilean miners who captured worldwide attention in 2010 after spending more than two months in a collapsed mine has lost everything after torrential rains struck northern Chile.

Victor Zamora is one of 33 men who were thrust into the international spotlight when they became trapped deep underground after a collapse at the San Jose copper mine in the Atacama desert.

Zamora's house was washed away early Tuesday along with most other structures in his small mining village, located near the town of Copiapo, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Santiago.

"This is another tragedy, we have lost everything," Zamora told AFP, speaking from the town of Tierra Amarilla.

The rare floods in the normally parched region have left at least 10 dead, 19 missing and hundreds of people homeless.

The interior ministry has declared a state of emergency and invoked a constitutional clause transferring power from the regional government to the military.

Zamora said the waters came at around 3:00 am when everyone was asleep. He was only able to get away with the few items he had with him.

"We've got nothing left. But me and my neighbors are trying to help each other," said Zamora, who in October 2010 was the 14th miner to be pulled safely to the surface after spending 69 days trapped deep underground.

Since the dramatic rescue, Zamora has never been able to find a permanent job and now lives on a small government pension.

Zamora and his colleagues were trapped on August 5, 2010 when a cave-in left them stranded and despairing deep down inside the remote copper mine.

During the next 17 days, the men waited in a shelter in the dark, dank tunnel, resigning themselves to what looked like a slow death.

On August 22, a probe drill hauled up to the surface had a note attached to it from the miners: "We're all well, all 33 in the shelter."

A Herculean operation was then started, with water, food and medicine dropped to the men.

Hawaii braces for rare storms

Residents of Hawaii are bracing for a second rare tropical storm after power was knocked out to thousands of homes on Big Island. Hurricanes have hit the US' Pacific island group only three times since 1950.

Deutsche Welle, 9 Aug 2014

The US National Weather Service urged Hawaiian residents to "keep on guard" in case Hurricane Julio changed direction. On Saturday, it was cruising about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) east of the state's biggest island.

Julio was packing winds of 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour). Meteorologists said if it stayed on its route unchanged, it would weaken and lie about 300 kilometers north of the island chain on Sunday, local time.

On Friday, tropical storm Iselle - the first to hit the state in 22 years - downed trees, caused flooding and knocked out power to 21,000 homes, mainly on Big Island. Airlines canceled about 50 flights. Stores and schools were closed. No major injuries were reported.

Rain at least

After Iselle swept by, a tropical storm warning was kept in place for the island of Kauai, but canceled for Big Island, Oahu and Maui. Meteologists warned, however, that Julio could still bring a considerable amount of rain.

"Right now our guidance is indicating it's going to go north (of the state), but that can change and folks need to keep on guard," said weather service spokesman Mike Cantin.

Risky surfing

Lifeguards said a few surfers were braving waves at a Honolulu spot nicknamed "Suicides." Lifeguards on Oahu planned to respond only to emergency calls.

Meteorologist Anthony Reynes said waves on Hawaii's north- and east-facing shores could be between 3 and 4 meters (10 and 15 feet) high.

Storm damage prompted electoral officials to postponed voting for about 8,000 voters in Saturday's primary races to choose Democrat congressional and gubernatorial candidates for elections in November. Voting elsewhere in Hawaii would proceed, they said.

Chief election officer Scott Nago said the two precincts affected would vote later.

Japan bracing for typhoon

Southwest Japan was also bracing for a typhoon on Saturday, with more than 100,000 residents being advised to evacuate their homes.

Typhoon Halong has already brought disruption to outer areas, forcing the cancelations of hundreds of flights and stranding many summer vacation passengers.

The typhoon was projected to make landfall on the southwest island of Shikoku late Saturday. It was lashed by downpours last weekend.

Officials have warned that Halong could trigger landslides and flooding.

Britain, France hit hard by wild pre-Christmas storms

Deutsche Welle, 24 December 2013

Storms have caused death and damage in France and Britain, disrupting Christmas celebrations. Winds of up to 145 kph (90 mph) hit both sides of the channel, while power outages affected hundreds of thousands of homes.

At least five people have died in Britain due to the wild weather, while a teenager in France was killed when a wall collapsed on him. There are fears more deaths could be confirmed, with a Russian sailor feared dead after falling overboard from a damaged cargo ship off the north-west French coast.

Air, road, ferry and rail services faced widespread disruptions and cancellations, with southern England and Wales and the French regions of Brittany and Normandy among the worst hit. Ireland and the Netherlands were also affected.

While the storms had abated somewhat on Tuesday, the effects were still being felt. Around 240,000 homes in France lost electricity during the storm, with 185,000 still without power on Tuesday afternoon. The French weather service still had 16 of the country's 96 metropolitan departments on orange alert - its second-highest level - on Tuesday afternoon, having cut the number from 23 earlier in the day.

Britain's Energy Networks Association said engineers had restored power to around 420,000 homes, but 130,000 remains cut off. Flood alerts (276) and severe flood warnings (162) were in place on Tuesday, said Britain's Environment Agency.

"I'm across plans to get electricity to many without power. My thoughts are with them and those facing travel problems this Christmas Eve,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said via Twitter.

The storms are also expected to hit retailers hard, with the day leading up to Christmas usually among the year's busiest.

What if you decided to dig a hole and make steam out of the heat that's below your feet, instead of building a nuclear reactor? What if you finally realized that nuclear reactors are the world's most expensive and dangerous steam engines! There are lots of ways of making steam that will not hurt one animal, or molecule of air, and the process lays there ready for your discovery. What if you became benevolent and responsible, and GAIA  supported the balance of your numbers? What a concept! ..."

“… New ideas are things you never thought of. These ideas will be given to you so you will have answers to the most profound questions that your societies have had since you were born. Inventions will bring clean water to every Human on the planet, cheaply and everywhere. Inventions will give you power, cheaply and everywhere. These ideas will wipe out all of the reasons you now have for pollution, and when you look back on it, you'll go, "This solution was always there. Why didn't we think of that? Why didn't we do this sooner?" Because it wasn't time and you were not ready. You hadn't planted the seeds and you were still battling the old energy, deciding whether you were going to terminate yourselves before 2012. Now you didn't…. and now you didn't.

It's funny, what you ponder about, and what your sociologists consider the "great current problems of mankind", for your new ideas will simply eliminate the very concepts of the questions just as they did in the past. Do you remember? Two hundred years ago, the predictions of sociologists said that you would run out of food, since there wasn't enough land to sustain a greater population. Then you discovered crop rotation and fertilizer. Suddenly, each plot of land could produce many times what it could before. Do you remember the predictions that you would run out of wood to heat your homes? Probably not. That was before electricity. It goes on and on.

So today's puzzles are just as quaint, as you will see. (1)How do you strengthen the power grids of your great nations so that they are not vulnerable to failure or don't require massive infrastructure improvement expenditures? Because cold is coming, and you are going to need more power. (2) What can you do about pollution? (3) What about world overpopulation? Some experts will tell you that a pandemic will be the answer; nature [Gaia] will kill off about one-third of the earth's population. The best minds of the century ponder these puzzles and tell you that you are headed for real problems. You have heard these things all your life.

Let me ask you this. (1) What if you could eliminate the power grid altogether? You can and will. (2) What if pollution-creating sources simply go away, due to new ideas and invention, and the environment starts to selfcorrect? (3) Overpopulation? You assume that humanity will continue to have children at an exponential rate since they are stupid and can't help themselves. This, dear ones, is a consciousness and education issue, and that is going to change. Imagine a zero growth attribute of many countries - something that will be common. Did you notice that some of your children today are actually starting to ponder if they should have any children at all? What a concept! ….”

Tourists await Acapulco evacuation

Deutsche Welle, 18 Sep 2013

Thousands of tourists stranded in Mexico's resort city of Acapulco are waiting for an opportunity to leave after landslides cut roads. Two tropical storms over the weekend caused massive flooding and left 47 people dead.

Officials estimate that as many as 40,000 tourists remained stuck in Acapulco on Wednesday, with no real way of leaving except to wait for one of the few evacuation flights bound for Mexico City from Acapulco's flooded airport.

Two tropical storms, Ingrid and Manuel, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, converged and dumped torrential rain on Acapulco over the weekend.

The storms have abated but rain has continued, triggering landslides that have blocked the main road into and out of Acapulco. Half of the city is flooded, and supplies are running short in the popular tourist destination.

Waiting to fly out

On Tuesday, commercial flights run by Aeromexico and Interjet shuttled some passengers to Mexico City, with existing ticket-holders getting first priority followed by families with small children or elderly travelers.

The flights are made more complicated due to the fact that the airport terminal is flooded and its radar system is not working, requiring all landings on the wet runway to be done using so-called visual flight rules.

Passengers are being shuttled directly to the runway from temporary shelters and check-in points.

Military flights were also running from a nearby base, but the number of seats on these flights are limited and did not come close to accommodating the number of people trying to leave.

The Mexican military has also set up an air bridge to deliver supplies to the cut-off city.

Road clearance - two more days

Officials have said it could take another two days for the road leading out of Acapulco to be cleared.

Dozens were killed as a result of the flooding, and thousands of homes have been left without electricity.

The flooding and persistent rainfall still pose a threat and more damage and possibly deaths are still possible, officials say.

Millions affected by flooding in Colombia, UN humanitarian arm says

English.news.cn 2011-05-04

UNITED NATIONS, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations humanitarian arm said that some 3 million people have been affected by flooding in Colombia, with more than 400 dead after the rainy season started in the South American country, a UN spokesman said here Tuesday.

"With the onset of this year's rainy season in Colombia, some 3 million people have been affected by flooding, with more than 400 dead and nearly 500 others missing, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters here at a daily news briefing.

"Governors of some affected departments have reported that this year's new flooding in some areas is already worse than that of last year, when more than 2 million people were affected," the spokesman said.

"OCHA says that the flooding extends into many areas affected by the long-standing armed conflict and by activities of new illegal armed groups," he said.

"Between January and March 2011, the World Food Program (WFP) carried out an assessment, which found that the food security and nutrition situation in the areas affected by the floods has deteriorated overall," he added.

Massive landslide ruins 150 homes in Bolivia (Video)

Heavy rains caused a hilltop to collapse in a poor neighbourhood of the Bolivian capital on Sunday, cracking roads, destroying at least 150 homes and burying people's belongings under mud and debris. There were no fatalities despite the significant material damage in the barrio of Callapa, said La Paz Mayor Luis Revilla. People began evacuating late on Saturday when the hill started sliding and cracks appeared in streets and homes, Revilla said. It collapsed completely overnight.

By day, residents scrambled over unstable terrain to try to rescue furniture and other possessions from the muck. But continued slides brought down more homes and made salvage efforts dangerous. Slides are common in this mountain city about 11,900 feet (3,640 metres) above sea level, where another hill collapse a little over a week ago destroyed 20 homes. Torrential rains have caused flooding and slides around much of the country in recent weeks, killing at least 44 people according to official reports.

Brazil flood deaths top 800 with 400 still missing

BBC News, 23 January 2011

Officials in Brazil say more than 800 people are now known to have died in floods and landslides in the south-east of the country this month.

Buildings were swept away by the force of the
water and mud coming down sodden hillsides
More than 400 people are still missing after torrential rain caused whole hillsides to collapse.

The Brazilian government has said it will set up an early warning system to alert communities of impending danger.

The flooding is considered the worst natural disaster Brazil has ever experienced.

According to figures compiled by the newspaper O Globo, a third of all victims were under age.

The youngest fatality was a five-day-old baby buried in a mudslide in Nova Friburgo, the worst affected town with 324 dead.

Continuing danger

The number of missing has been declining as forensic experts identify more bodies, but rescue workers fear the full extent of the disaster is not yet known, with some remote communities still only reachable by helicopter.
